About Me

My name is Maarten Lommers, I’m 23 years old, and I’m currently pursuing a degree in Applied Computer Science. I chose this field because of my strong interest in technology, innovation, and problem-solving. Especially front-end development offers the perfect balance between creativity and technical challenge, which motivates me to keep learning and improving.

Outside of my academic focus, I have a strong passion for learning Chinese and painting. Studying Chinese not only broadens my language skills but also deepens my appreciation for different cultures and ways of thinking. Painting allows me to express myself creatively and provides a unique contrast to the logical structure of my technical studies.

Looking ahead, my ambition is to move to Malaysia and build a career in the front-end development or the data analysis sector. I'm drawn to the dynamic tech industry and multicultural environment there. My goal is to contribute to innovative projects in a global context while continuing to grow both personally and professionally.

Chinese Webshop

About This Project

This project was part of our final evaluation for the Web Development course. We were given the freedom to choose our own topic, and I developed a fully functional webshop using Laravel and Livewire. The webshop features a connected mail server, database integration, and multilanguage support , allowing users to browse and interact in different languages. The goal was to build a real-world application that showcases both frontend and backend capabilities.

My Contributions

I was responsible for the complete development of the webshop. This included:
- Setting up the Laravel framework and configuring Livewire for dynamic frontend components.
- Designing and implementing the database schema.
- Creating a multilingual interface , allowing language switching.
- Integrating a mail server to handle contact forms and order confirmations.
- Deploying and hosting the project online for demonstration.

What I have Learned

Through this project, I gained valuable experience in:
- Connecting and displaying dynamic data on the frontend using Livewire.
- Configuring and managing a mail server to send automated emails.
- Implementing multilanguage support for broader accessibility.
- Hosting and deploying a Laravel application.
- Managing both backend logic and frontend interactions in a smooth workflow.

Roblox Studio Game Engine

About This Project

This game project was something I started in my free time together with a friend during the summer. We set out to create our own tycoon-style game, focusing on building an interactive world that users can explore and engage with. The project is still ongoing, and we continue to develop new features and improve the overall experience.

My Contributions

I’ve worked on several core aspects of the game, including:
- Designing and developing an interactive world for players to explore.
- Implementing a dynamic UI and game animations.
- writing systems to save and load user data.
- Contributing to 3D modeling for in-game elements.
- Collaborating closely on game logic and mechanics using Lua scripting.

What I have Learned

This project taught me a lot about the complexity of game development. I’ve learned that:
- Game design is extremely challenging, especially at the beginning.
- Having help and collaboration early on is really important.
- Scope creep can be a serious issue and needs to be managed carefully.
- On the bright side, Lua is relatively easy to work with, which made scripting a lot more approachable.

Football Club Application

About This Project

This project was developed as part of the Skills Integration Lab 2 course. We were tasked with continuing and improving upon the use-case diagrams and prototypes created by previous students, with the goal of building a fully functional football management application for a client. Using Laravel and Livewire, we started by designing a solid data model and then moved into Agile development with Scrum sprints. We’re currently in our final sprint, and the project is nearing completion.

My Contributions

I played an active role throughout the development process, with a strong focus on:
- Building and managing CRUD functionalities across the application.
- Creating and integrating an automatic mail server.
- Developing the feature that allows users to edit and customize mail templates through frontend input, which is automatically processed and applied in the backend using a special formatting system.
- Working with dynamic data and UI.
- Setting up the database.

What I have Learned

This project has helped me grow significantly in both technical and collaborative areas. I learned:
- How to work with complex data relationships across multiple tables in Laravel.
- How to design a system where users can update mail templates from the frontend, which are automatically processed into a usable format for backend use.
- The importance of structure and planning when working in a Scrum-based team environment.
- How to apply Livewire for responsive, real-time updates in the application.

Use-Case diagram & Prototyping

About This Project

This project was part of the Skills Integration Lab 2 course. Working in a team, we developed a prototype for a ping pong club application using Figma. We followed a fully Agile Development process with multiple SCRUM sprints, and frequently gathered feedback from our client. The project began with creating a detailed use-case diagram and an analysis report, which served as the foundation for the interactive prototype.

My Contributions

While there wasn’t a strict task division in our group, we collaborated closely and continuously reviewed and improved each other’s work. I contributed to:
- Creating the use-case diagram and writing parts of the analysis report.
- Designing and refining the Figma prototype, ensuring it aligned with client expectations.
- Participating actively in SCRUM meetings and client feedback sessions, helping adapt the project direction based on new insights.

What I have Learned

Through this project, I learned:
- How to effectively work within a SCRUM framework and adapt to ongoing feedback.
- How to design a complete use-case diagram and structure an analysis report.
- How to use Figma as a prototyping tool for UI/UX design and client communication.

Qlik environment

About This Project

This project was part of the Data Visualisation course. I created a storyboard aimed for tourists where I analyse the booking trends, price trends and ratings of AirBnB listings in Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels. The goal was to provide users with a logical storyboard which they can use to choose their stay. The storyboard is user-friendly, modern and simple.

My Contributions

- Creating the storyboard and analysis report.
- Designing and refining the Qlik storyboard, ensuring it is user-friendly.
- A comprehensive Exploratory Data Analysis to ensure the storyboard is representative.

What I have Learned

Through this project, I learned:
- How to effectively work within Qlik.
- How to design a user-friendly storyboard and create an analysis summary.
- How to use Qlik as a data visualisation tool for client & business communication.
